What are odds on Ktkarena?

TL;DR

By default, every bet is at 2.0 odds - you put in X, you win 2X minus the commission. If more people bet on one side than the other, we slightly adjust the odds to balance the market and make matching easier. The odds displayed are always the ones that apply to your bet, locked in at confirmation.

The default 2.0 odds: why it's the backbone

Betting on Ktkarena follows a simple logic. Two bettors stake the same amount on two opposite sides. The winner takes both stakes, minus our commission.

Mathematically, that gives default odds of 2.0. You stake 1,000 KTK, you can win 2,000 KTK (so +1,000 KTK net on top of getting your stake back), minus the commission.

It's different from traditional bookmaker betting where each bet has its own odds calculated by the house. Here, the odds don't need to be calculated by an algorithm: they follow naturally from two people staking equal amounts.

When and why odds vary

In some rare cases, the odds can differ from 2.0. That happens when there's a strong imbalance between the two sides of an event.

Imagine a heavily lopsided event: Real Madrid against an amateur team. 95% of bettors stake on Real Madrid. To match the 95% taking the Real Madrid side, the system has to find bettors taking the opposite side. Since there's little supply on the "amateur" side, the system can slightly adjust the odds: those taking the opposite side (the risk) get more favorable odds (for example 2.3 instead of 2.0), and those taking the obvious side see their odds drop (1.85 instead of 2.0).

This adjustment stays limited: the odds will never go above 2.5 or below 1.7 on Ktkarena. We want to remain a peer-to-peer market, not a bookmaker in disguise.

Important. The odds displayed at the moment you confirm are locked in for your bet. If the odds change after your confirmation because of a massive influx on one side, your bet keeps the initial odds.

Comparison with traditional bookmakers' odds

On Bet365 or 1xBet, the odds are calculated by the bookmaker to guarantee themselves a margin. If a bet has a "true" 50/50 probability, the bookmaker will offer it to you at 1.85 - not 2.0. The 0.15 difference is the house margin.

On Ktkarena, we take the commission afterwards, not inside the odds. So:

  • Ktkarena bet at 2.0 odds, 3% commission (Premium tier): you stake 1,000 KTK, you win 1,940 KTK net (i.e. +940 KTK profit).
  • Bookmaker bet at 1.85 odds: you stake 1,000 FCFA, you win 850 FCFA profit.

For the same stake and the same result, the P2P bet is more profitable for the bettor. It's one of the reasons P2P betting is growing all over the world.

How to read the odds in the app

On every betting screen, you see three pieces of information:

  1. The current odds (for example "2.0" or "2.15"). These are the odds that apply to your bet if you confirm now.
  2. The estimated winnings ("+9,700 KTK for a 10,000 KTK stake"). Calculated taking your tier's commission into account.
  3. Recent movement (rare, but shown for heavily imbalanced events): "Odds stable" or "Odds rising" if the market is moving.

The odds are displayed large, right below the name of your chosen side. You can't miss them.

Indicative pool odds

During the event, indicative pool odds are calculated in real time from the residuals waiting on both sides. It's an estimate of the odds you'd get if your residual switched to the pool phase. The final pool odds (locked at the pool phase) may differ slightly depending on who enters the pool and who is refunded.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

No. Once your bet is confirmed, the odds are locked. If you confirm at 2.05 and the odds rise to 2.10 after your bet, you stay at 2.05.

Probably because the market is slightly imbalanced on your side (more demand than opposing supply). It's a sign that your side is the "favorite" according to other bettors.

No. We believe odds transparency matters more than marketing. No "odds of the day", no welcome bonuses that distort the odds. Just a clear P2P market.
