Understanding Ktkarena conversion
When you deposit or withdraw, there are two separate operations:
- The conversion of your currency (FCFA, EUR, USD, USDC) to KTK (our internal currency).
- Any provider fee deduction (Stripe, Yellow Card, etc.).
Understanding how these two operations interact prevents most misunderstandings.
If you're just getting started, read “What is 1 KTK?” first.
The conversion rate
How it's set
The KTK ↔ your currency rate is updated in real time based on:
- The CFA Franc exchange rate against the EUR and USD (pegged to EUR, floating against USD).
- Marginal internal variations (very small, less than 1% over 30 days).
- Operational fees built into the conversion (negligible).
Where it's displayed
Before each transaction, the rate is displayed in plain sight on the confirmation screen:
You deposit : 10,000 FCFA Rate applied : 1 KTK = 1.5 FCFA Conversion : 6,666 KTK Stripe fees : 0 KTK (Mobile Money is free) Amount credited : 6,666 KTK
You see EVERYTHING before you confirm. No post-transaction surprises.
When it's locked
The rate is frozen the moment you confirm. Even if:
- The rate changes between your confirmation and the actual credit → your initial rate applies.
- The market moves while you wait → your deposit stays unchanged.
Good to know. If we announced one rate and then applied another, that would be a critical bug worth reporting. You can check in your history: the rate applied must be exactly the one displayed when you confirmed.
The 4 most common explanations for a “discrepancy”
Explanation 1 - You're comparing against the wrong rate
The KTK ↔ FCFA rate isn't exactly 1 KTK = 1.5 FCFA at all times. It fluctuates within a narrow band (around 1.45 to 1.55).
Concrete example:
- You deposit 10,000 FCFA on a Tuesday.
- Rate at that moment: 1 KTK = 1.502 FCFA.
- You receive: 10,000 / 1.502 = 6,658 KTK (not 6,666).
- Difference: 8 KTK, or 0.12%.
This discrepancy is normal and minor.
Explanation 2 - Misunderstood provider fees
For bank cards (1.5%) and the USDC stablecoin (0.5%), fees are deducted from the incoming amount.
Concrete example with a Visa card:
- You pay 10 EUR by card.
- Stripe fees 1.5% = 0.15 EUR.
- Net amount that reaches Ktkarena: 9.85 EUR.
- Conversion to KTK: 9.85 / 0.0023 = 4,282 KTK (not 4,348).
- So you see 4,282 KTK, when you expected 4,348.
The 66 KTK difference = the Stripe fees. You see them on the confirmation screen, but they're easy to forget afterward.
Explanation 3 - You're looking at the wrong amount
The app displays 3 amounts in a transaction's history:
- Gross amount: what you paid in local currency.
- Amount after fees: what reached Ktkarena.
- Amount in KTK: what was credited to your balance.
If you compare “Gross amount” with “Amount in KTK”, you get an apparent rate that includes the fees. For the real rate, compare “Amount after fees” with “Amount in KTK”.
Explanation 4 - A real conversion bug (very rare)
In about 0.1% of cases, a real bug can occur:
- Desynchronization between our API and our provider.
- A faulty update of the cached rate.
- Mishandled rounding (whole KTK vs KTK cents).
Important. If you identify a discrepancy of more than 1% that none of the 3 reasons above explains, it's potentially a bug. Reporting procedure below.
How to check for yourself
Step 1 - Get the rate displayed during your transaction
In Wallet → History → Transaction details, you see:
- Amount in local currency.
- Rate applied (KTK ↔ currency).
- Final amount in KTK.
- Provider fees (if applicable).
Step 2 - Redo the math
With a simple calculator:
Final KTK amount = (Currency amount − Provider fees) / Rate applied
Step 3 - Compare with the actual credit
Check on your KTK balance that the credited amount matches the result of your calculation.
If the numbers match (give or take rounding): everything is normal. If the numbers diverge by 1% or more: that's suspicious, report it.
How to report a real conversion bug
- Go to Wallet → History → [Transaction in question].
- Tap Report a problem → Conversion error.
- The form automatically detects:
- The displayed rate vs the applied rate.
- The expected amount vs the credited amount.
- The discrepancy in KTK and as a percentage.
- Submit the request with a screenshot if you have one.
- Our team verifies within 48 hours.
- If the bug is confirmed: full refund of the discrepancy, free of charge.
What about withdrawals?
Same logic, in the other direction. When you withdraw:
- Your KTK are converted into your original payment currency.
- The rate is locked at the moment of your withdrawal request.
- Provider fees (if applicable) are deducted from the KTK amount.
- The final amount in your local currency is displayed BEFORE you confirm.
Good to know. If you withdraw 30 days after depositing, the rate may have moved within the usual band (1.45-1.55 FCFA per 1 KTK). That's inherent to any multi-currency transaction. For large amounts, it's marginal.
