Why wasn't my opponent found immediately?

TL;DR

Three typical causes: an unpopular event (few players on that topic), a rare tier (Elite or Institutional), off-peak hours (early morning CEMAC time). The cascade will progressively send you to step 2 (inter-tier cascade) then step 3 (multi-bet aggregation). If no step finds an opponent at placement, the matching loop keeps going in the background for the event's entire duration. Patience, or cancellation if you prefer. Tip: pick popular events + standard tiers to maximize your matching speed.

Cause 1: the event isn't popular

Matching is fast when lots of people bet on the event. The more active bettors there are, the more easily the algorithm finds a person taking the opposite side.

On events like Real Madrid vs Barça, the French presidential election, or BTC > $100K, there are thousands of bettors at all times. Matched in under a second at step 1 (direct match within your tier).

On niche events - an amateur match, a regional election in a little-followed country, a contemporary art prize - there are fewer bettors. The cascade can take a few seconds or reach step 2 (inter-tier cascade) or even step 3 (multi-bet aggregation).

How to check popularity before betting: on the event screen, you see "X bets in progress on this event." If you see more than 100, it's very popular (near-guaranteed instant match). If you see fewer than 10, expect to wait a bit.

Cause 2: your tier is rare

Tiers aren't evenly distributed. On the platform:

  • Discovery (1K-10K): ~45% of bettors
  • Standard (10K-50K): ~35% of bettors
  • Premium (50K-200K): ~15% of bettors
  • Elite (200K-1M): ~4% of bettors
  • Institutional (1M-20M): ~1% of bettors

If you bet in the Elite or Institutional tier, there are statistically fewer people on your opposite side. The cascade will therefore more often reach step 2 (inter-tier cascade) or step 3 (multi-bet aggregation).

Tip. On popular events, even the rare tiers find a match quickly. On niche events + a rare tier, the bet can stay waiting for an opponent - the matching loop keeps going in the background until the event closes.

Cause 3: the time or day isn't optimal

Our activity peak is between 6 PM and 11 PM CEMAC time (UTC+1) - when people get home from work and watch the matches. Weekends are also very active.

Conversely:

  • Early morning (5-8 AM CEMAC time): few active bettors.
  • Monday-Wednesday during the day: lower activity (usually no big match).
  • During prayer hours on sensitive topics: a noticeable slowdown.

If you bet during off-peak hours, the cascade can take longer. It's purely a matter of liquidity at that moment.

What to do concretely to speed things up

Three levers:

1. Pick popular events. If you want an instant match, bet on the flagship matches, closely followed elections, major cryptos. Liquidity is everything.

2. Lower your tier. A Discovery or Standard bet is almost always matched at step 1 (direct match within your tier). If you can afford to stake less, you speed up your match.

3. Patience or cancellation. If matching takes too long, you have two choices: wait (the matching loop keeps going in the background and re-attempts the cascade every time a new bettor arrives) or cancel without penalty (as long as you're not matched). No bad option.

Bonus tip. Use Prediction Mode to practice on niche events without risking any KTK. Popular events on the Arena are where you play. Experimental events belong in prediction. Discover Prediction Mode.

You always have a safety net

Even if the cascade doesn't find you an opponent at placement, you're never stuck. Two mechanisms take over automatically:

  • The matching loop keeps going: for the event's entire duration, a job re-attempts the cascade every time a new bettor arrives. Matching loop details.
  • The pool phase at event end: unmatched residuals are gathered into a mutualized pool. You can tune your preferences (acceptance and minimum odds). If the computed odds don't suit you, you're refunded in full. Pool phase details.

In practice, more than 99% of bets end up matched (P2P or pool). The rest are refunded without penalty. You know the worst-case scenario in advance.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Yes, that's within the normal range. At step 3 (multi-bet aggregation), the system progressively gathers bettors to cover your stake. Wait a few more seconds or cancel without penalty. In parallel, the matching loop keeps going in the background.

Your bet goes through step 2 (inter-tier cascade) then step 3 (multi-bet aggregation). If there's nobody else at all on the event, you stay waiting for an opponent - the matching loop re-attempts until betting closes, then the pool phase takes over at event end. If nobody shows up and the computed odds don't suit you, your bet is refunded in full.

No. The matching loop (FIFO) makes no distinction based on a bettor's tier, seniority, or history. Everyone is equal before the algorithm.
